These photos are part of a gallery exhibit at the University of Rochester, in Rochester, NY. All of the photos are of abandoned places around Western New York. There are many abandoned buildings in this area due to rapid economic/infrastructure changes in the last century. The replacement of the Eerie Canal with the New York Thruway, the collapse of film photography, and over-development before the recent recession left the area with lots of empty buildings and no reason to replace them with something new.

I’m told the motorcycles used to be at a place called Cole’s on the north side of the Erie Canal but got moved to this site when urban renewal started along the canal. The owner apparently died in the 1970’s, and now the motorcycles have just been left there to rust. I’m not sure who owns the place now.

I didn’t have much time to take pictures there, as we had many other abandoned sites to see, but it’s really a huge place, three stories, and just brimming with antique motorcycles and parts. The pictures are all taken on the second, and most structurally stable floor of the building.

The motorcycle graveyard, as my friends and I are now calling it, is definitely one of the most eerie, strangest places I have ever been, and i think these pictures really speak to the tendency for old things to be forgotten in america, especially in rural areas, where a building can lay unoccupied for decades.

leather motorcycle gloves:

Question by Gorgonzola: How do I wash the black dye and oil from leather gloves off of my hands after wearing them in the rain?
I have motorcycle gloves that I forgot to do an initial wash (to remove the extra dye) when I bought them. I rode in the rain with them, and the dye/oil/whatever got all over my hands and the marks are really difficult to remove. How do I remove the dye from my hands aside from washing them ten times with a scrub brush and lots of hand soap?

Try a solvent cleaner like they sell at hardware stores to remove oil paint and varnish from the hands.

You have to be careful with it. Dispose of the rag you use outside because they are combustible and don’t get any flame or spark near the liquid (or the rag).

If solvent won’t remove it, nothing will.

Yes , it’s normal………..seems that high credit risks are associated with bad driving……….for the life of me, I don’t understand their logic …..don’t worry, it’s done all the time…….

No you don’t..Does she have a motorcycle endorsement? Probably not so no you don’t need to. With that type of thinking if I had my 70 year old mother move in with me then I would have to put her on my insurance for my bike.How the hell can someone be on an insurance policy that does not have a license, not drivers licens a motorcycle license hahah

If you go with your current insurance company your rates could increase. If the accident was the “other guys” fault, then you should probably go through his insurance company. You should take the bike in to a few different shops and get quotes for how much it will cost to fix. Then give it to the guy and have his insurance company pay to fix it. I wouldn’t worry about the company acting shady.

motorbike rental:

I’ve rented motorbikes in a couple of places and all they wanted was your passport to hold until you returned the bike, which I don’t like leaving with anybody. The last time I left my driver’s license instead, but I did have an International Driver’s Permit just in case I was stopped by the police. The Thai Police will normally accept either your driver’s license from home or an IDP if you should be stopped, and it’s a good idea to bring copies of your passport if the rental company wants to keep your passport. You don’t have to have an IDP, but it doesn’t hurt to have one, I’ve shown my IDP when stopped before and they asked for nothing more. The main thing is to have some 100 baht notes to pay the “fine” if you’re stopped by the police. Have fun.

I guess I should have provided more info… In no way are we trying to scam anyone. He finally finished repairs (lower end and chain) on Wed. and yes he rode it two days w/o ins. I made the mistake of not getting it sooner…and all we wanted was to get the temp. ID card so we could get the bike out of impound before the rate got out of hand.

It depends on where you rent it from. Just make sure you have a valid motorcycle license, and your twenty five or older.
