Your insurance on your first bike will probably be more than your car insurance was. You will save some money if that bike a.) is not a sportbike, b.) has a small-ish motor (less than 1000cc), c.) is used and fairly cheap. Taking the MSF course will also keep your payments down.

As you gain a couple years experience, prove to be a competent rider (no tickets or insurance claims) and get a car again (so you can list your bike as a "recreational vehicle" on your insurance) your rates will go down and could be cheaper than your car.

EDIT: Bear in mind that the people throwing out numbers below are NOT new riders. They are experienced riders with more than one vehicle. Go to Progressive.com or somewhere are run a quote, you'll see that you'll be paying much more than what they are.

i always think of it like this
motorbike insurance is cheaper, because lets be honest, if you crash fast enough, your most likely not going to be alive to claim.

Motorcycle insurance is less costly than an auto. It cost me about two hundred a year to insure my old car and thirty for my tag. I pay forty-five dollars for insurance and fifteen for the tag. The only reason I even have a car is that I am in the middle of a rebuild on my bike but as soon as the bike runs again the car is up for sale.

i pay 55 a month(just basic"not full coverage) for my truck and 35 a month for my 2005 big twin cruiser and that's full coverage with about all the good options. Have to say you will pay less for bike insurance but my driving record has no blemishes and I know for a fact that you will pay a lot more if you have a crotch rocket. Oh yeah, in Florida you need not have insurance on a bike.Hope that helps and be damn careful!

Good numbers. Why the difference?

Liability covers the damage you can do to others. A bike has less kinetic energy and thus can not do as much damage as a car when it hits something.

Uninsured motorists covers damage to you when you are hit by another vehicle. A collision in a car is much less likely to involve huge medical bills than a collision on a bike.
